OPEN DATA HACKATHON 2024
Smart Living with a highlight on National Games 2025 in Hong Kong
With the rising prominence of open data applications and streamlined business operations, utilizing AI with cloud solutions has never been more crucial. Its benefits include its capacity to generate multifarious algorithms for timely analysis and provide more connected processes in a more secure cyber environment.
Witnessing this promising trend, Hong Kong Technology Advancement Group (HKtag) held our first “Open Data Hackathon” (ODH) since 2021 and annually with Open Data Hackathon Prize Presentation Ceremony at the end of the project period. This year, we focus on the topic of Smart Living, again for ODH 2024 due to its popularity with more areas for contestants to consider and create. We aim to allow our participants to utilize the open data available on the Open Data Portal (https://data.gov.hk) and Hong Kong Common Spatial Data Infrastructure Portal (https://portal.csdi.gov.hk/csdi-webpage/), and see how the industry experts make effective use of open data to improve public utility services. We hope to see our participants make use of the open data resources from the Government, AI and cloud technologies to compose their solutions. With collective efforts and intelligent concepts among participants, together we can create a smarter and more advanced city.
ODH has become one of the signature events in the industry and a great success with impact from audience and participants, having a viral of media covering the insights of our honorary guests, judges, final contestants, and the outcomes of our hackathon with innovative solutions. We believe that open data is for all people, and everyone should be able to experience the power of open data. This year, therefore, Open Data Hackathon 2024 is available in 4 streams, namely the primary stream (P4-P6), secondary stream, tertiary stream and public stream. This Hackathon consists of a series of seminars, training sessions, and a conference on the final day – enhancing their solution presentations in our hackathon leading to substantial positive responses from participated teachers and participants, and of course, an encouragement to us!
This year, HKtag will continue to enhance the promotion of Open Data with different entities including more community partners, reaching more stakeholders and industry players in other channels. As digitalization and smart devices become more prevalent, we anticipate a better and healthier way of life. Therefore, Open Data Hackathon 2024 will continue its theme as ‘Smart Living’, with a highlight on National Games 2025 in Hong Kong while promoting the integration of cloud computing tools, IoT devices, and data analysis to implement innovative solutions and optimize living conditions. ‘Smart Living’ covers not only daily life applications but also healthcare, elderly and special needs groups support, emergency and accident planning, public facilities use, digital payment, and even “iAM Smart” applications, of which some of the areas can be enhanced with focus on National Games 2025. Such as crowd control for opening and dismissal of the Games, suggested travelling route and accommodation around the city during the Games period etc. Our contestants can create their solutions in this wide range of domains. It is crucial to promote data-driven solutions and address any unresolved social issues without further delay.
